Our home is part of a 14th century monastic farm built by nearby Gloucester Abbey. Returning to it after living in the US, we think it is a drop of paradise!

Churchill's first name remembers Sir Henry Winston of Standish Court (d.1611), whose daughter Sarah married John Churchill. See Sir Henry's elaborate tomb in our church, St Nicholas - and its stained glass and 180 ceiling bosses.

From Abbot's Wing it is an hour's walk up through fields to Haresfield Beacon (or a quick drive) and walks along the Cotswold Way north to Painswick or south to King's Stanley and beyond. Idea: do a different section each day.

At Cheltenham's renowned jazz, science, music and literary festivals (May to Oct), Gloucester History Festival (Sept) and Stroud Book Festival (Nov) you can meet the participants and get books signed.

The valleys' forgotten mills are now studios for a big colony of artists. Stroud's Site Festival weekends (11-12th and 18-19 June in 2022) are a great way to meet some - and buy work directly from them.

Not only are there great gardens to visit at nearby royal Highgrove, Painswick, Westbury Court, Prinknash Abbey, Miserden and Lydney Park; whole villages open their summer gardens!

The UK's leading wildfowl and wetlands research and conservation site, here you can sit in a hide overlooking the Severn Estuary to spot wild, exotic and migratory waterbirds of all kinds.
